Accountancy International Applicants

At the Carlson School of Management, we embrace applicants from around the globe. Prepare for an immersive and life-changing journey where you'll cultivate skills, connections, and insights to propel you toward a successful and impactful future.

The STEM designation allows eligible international students to extend their visa for two more years after graduation, in addition to the one-year Optional Practical Training (OPT). This means that MAcc degree holders can stay in the U.S. for up to 36 months after completing their degree.

Be mindful of the time needed to process visas. We recommend you apply as early as possible to allow maximum time.

What you need to pursue a Master of Accountancy

As an international student, you’ll follow the same application process as U.S.-based students, with a few additional items.

You must have a degree considered equivalent to a 4-year US Bachelor's degree. A 3-year undergraduate degree without an additional year of graduate study is insufficient.

If you are unsure if your degree would be considered equivalent, please reach out to macct@umn.edu.

You may upload scanned copies of transcripts or other educational documents using the online application system.

Official documents are not required at the time of application, but will be required upon admission.

If your credentials do not show the university grading system, submit a statement from the university with this information. If credentials do not record the awarding of the degree, submit copies of your diplomas.

If you are from the former USSR or a European country, submit English translations along with your credentials in the original language.

Please submit transcripts and degree award statements in English and Chinese.

Due to the temporary suspension of GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS testing in China, we will extend our application deadline for those who have not yet taken their exam(s). Please contact mba@umn.edu if your test has been canceled and you need to extend your deadline.

If you've graduated from a university in the above countries, you may submit copies of certified or attested mark sheets or reports that detail the results of all exams. These credentials must be certified by university personnel or government officials. They should bear the original signature of the certifying official. Do not certify your credentials.

You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funding to meet all educational expenses for the duration of your study in the U.S. This includes tuition, fees, room and board, transportation, and other expenses. Additional financial resources are required if your spouse or children will accompany you.

Full-time students must hold an F-1 student visa to pursue MBA study at the University of Minnesota unless your funding source requires you to hold a J-1 exchange/visitor visa.

You must provide proof of English language proficiency. Please note that the exam date should be within two years of graduate program start date. The requirement may be waived if you have completed post-secondary coursework (16 semester credits or 24 quarter credits) in a designated country (i.e., United States; Canada, except Quebec; UK/Ireland) within two years of the program start date.
